It is a great honor to be screening The Dhamma Brothers at the Sidewalk Festival in Birmingham. Although in many ways it is a universal story, the film is grounded in the social and cultural context of Alabama. From the first day I met the Dhamma Brothers, I knew there was an incredible story to be told - prisoners, society’s outcasts and untouchables, embarking on a journey in search of inner peace, to address their crimes and heal themselves.
I also realized that documentary film was the only medium that could capture the power of this touching, sensitive, and unprecedented story. It is my hope that, as we struggle as a society to make decisions about the future role of prisons and how to prepare prisoners for their return to society, The Dhamma Brothers can lead the way toward the realization of the essential value of rehabilitation programs that offer prisoners the opportunity and the skills to connect with and expand their deeper humanity.
